To start with, the examining specialist uses a method called thoracoscopy to ascertain the extent of damage to the lungs and this is done by making a cut in the sternum and introducing the thoracoscope into the ribs. If he notices growth tissues which are not normal, he removes them and then studies them for any trace of cancer cells. This is known as biopsy and is a common method to find out the presence of cancer in general. The patient does not experience any pain as local anesthesia is administered.

If the test is positive, then different treatment options are considered.

The first one involves surgery where the doctor removes the affected part of the lung lining and in specific cases; the entire lung is removed through a process called pneumonectomy. In some other cases, a portion of the diaphragm may also be removed.

The next line of treatment is through the radiation process in which high energy rays are used to eliminate the cancer stricken cells and these rays can be either internal or external based. When they are introduced into the lungs through tubes, the radiation is internal and when the body is exposed to such radiation from a machine, it is termed as external.
Any fluid that has got accumulated in the lungs is drained out using suction through a needle introduced into the chest and this process is called thoracentesis. The removal of such fluid is important as it can interfere with the breathing process and in order to prevent recurrence, certain drugs may be introduced through the tubes.

Nowadays, a novel kind of treatment called intraoperative photodynamic therapy is being used to effectively eliminate the cells affected by cancer. This treatment is a combination of drugs and special light and prior to this treatment, a chemical is introduced into the body which highlights the cancer stricken cells and makes them sensitive to the special light, enabling their elimination easily.

Becoming aware of the disease is just half the battle won. You need to know the extent of the cancer and the stage to be able to take the right treatment. Two systems are used to determine the stage of cancer in Pleural Mesothelioma and are called the TNM system and the Brighan system. TNM is very commonly used for detecting the stage of cancer for Peritoneal Mesothelioma in the absence of any other system.
Three important parameters play an important role in the TNM system and they are the tumor, lymph nodes and metastasis. In the first stage of Mesothelioma, the pleura get covered by only one layer of malignant cells, though the pericardium and the diaphragm may also get affected.
The second stage affects the pleura such that they are covered by two layers and the fluid that is normally created by the pleura, which facilitates the expansion and contraction of the lungs starts getting accumulated in the space between the lungs and the chest wall. In normal circumstances, surplus fluid is taken in by the lymph and blood, leaving only an appropriate quantity necessary for the smooth functioning of the lungs, but in the second stage of this disease, this fluid remains floating causing breathlessness and pain in the chest.
The third stage involves the spreading of the cancer cells into the areas of the esophagus, chest and lymph nodes and the patient starts experiencing extreme pain in these areas. The last stage is when the cells make their way into the bloodstream and other essential organs like liver and the brain.

Some high risk occupations need to be particularly aware of the consequences of this exposure to asbestos and should take adequate precautions. They are painters, brick layers, drywall contractors, miners and mechanics. Other occupations include those in the manufacture of fireproofing, plumbing, floor tiles and cement. Many personnel in the rail yards, ship yards and oil refineries are equally at risk of asbestos exposure. In short, people in the building industry need to be very aware and careful about this hazard that they are continuously exposed to and need to take not only adequate precautions but also conduct regular check ups.
Workers in these fields are duly covered under strict workplace regulations and the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration have put in place some stringent rules to ensure the safety and well being of these workers. However, some fibers of asbestos may still stick itself to hair, skin and the clothing and when this is brought home; family members are also put at risk. Federal laws thus mandate that certain precautions are followed by the workmen prior to leaving for their homes such as:
• Taking a shower
• Not taking work related clothing home
• Ensuring that the workmen change to street clothing ahead of leaving the place of work
• Making sure that the work related clothing is properly washed at the place of work and not taken home
The above measures have ensured the control of mesothelioma spreading through the secondary route to the family members of the workmen.

This delay in the disease manifesting itself is a serious concern as you cannot take immediate preventive steps and by the time you actually diagnose the condition, precious time would have been lost. Very often, individuals exhibiting signs of the disease tend to dismiss it off as bronchitis and hope that the condition would disappear with time. This leads to a neglect of the symptoms and the patient starts experiencing a lot of breathing problems as the disease progresses.
It is important to catch symptoms of cancer very early to make a definite difference in its treatment and invariably when it is detected at its initial stages, the person makes a quick recovery and is able to lead a healthy life.
The swift manner in which the cancerous cells take root and start spreading within the body is the main reason as to why it is imperative to catch it early and take the necessary medication to nip it in its bud. The haphazard growth of cancer cells gains momentum especially because they are usually located in proximity to the principal blood supply and other important fluid systems of the body, enabling them to disperse rapidly and form fresh colonies.
That is the reason why mesothelioma can be deadly as the patient is totally unaware of his condition and the fact that there is a deadly disease lurking within his system. By the time he exhibits symptoms and tries to take corrective action, it is invariably too late as chemotherapy has its limitations and is not able to destroy all the cells.

Asbestos initiate tissue scarring and acting as a carcinogen, which was found in the early 19th century and became generally accepted in the sixties of the 19th century.

WHEN IS harmful?:
It is a siliceous mineral fiber, which can be found in nature. Because of their physical chemical properties, particularly resistance to combustion, its use of mid-19th century, is very extensive.

It becomes harmful to us, if the use or treatment is in a relaxing environment and we are exposed to it with inhalation. Asbestos fibers, which we breath, remain in the lungs and can cause disease. With some probability we can become sick, but in the first place that depends on the quantitative burden of lung asbestos dust and the biological properties of the organism, requiring that some more and others less susceptible to the action of an agent. Anyone who has been exposed to inhaled asbestos dust, therefore, do not get sick. Scarring of the lungs can be expected particularly in those with a high lung burden of asbestos. In the operation of a carcinogenic asbestos is not clearly the interdependence of the quantitative load of the lungs by asbestos and can be expressed also in less time after exposure to asbestos dust.

These properties have led to that in the last 100 years life of recovery and reached its limits in the seventies of the twentieth century. With the knowledge of its harmful effects, which have become generally accepted professional medical sixty years of the last century, the use of asbestos in the developed world, particularly in the U.S., already in the seventies of last century began to reduce or was largely eliminated, while in the developing countries was continued. Among them is continued with USA until 1996, when they recognized the existence of an epidemic asbestos disease in USA and also other parts of the worls, and adopted by the 20 years delayed developed countries asbestos law, which is prohibited or to provide advance and safe use of the asbestos.

Asbestos fibers become harmful to health when entering into the organism. Most of them are taken by breathing. Fibers of asbestos triggered in tissue inflammation, which results in the formation of scar tissue and malfunction in cancer tissue.

The development of the disease
The disease develops with latency of several decades. Asbestos fiber, which we breath, stay in the lungs and remain in a position where it is located, life raises focus inflammation and can potentially cause development of cancer in the lungs.

You must not assume that you will get justice quickly and smoothly. That is why selecting the right law firm by looking at a variety of options and only then signing the contract with an appropriate law firm is of utmost importance. Remember that the firm you finally select has to procure you the compensation you are seeking and a lot depends on the law firm in not only getting you that compensation, but also making the entire process as smooth and economical as possible.
Invariably, you will be faced with the classic dilemma – Whether to opt for a big well known firm or go for a lesser known smaller firm?
The advantages with a big firm are very obvious – they have enough experience having dealt with many such cases, but on flip side, it is this very advantage of size that could be detrimental to your interest since they might not be able to provide you with the kind of individual attention that a smaller firm might provide. This is because many of these big firms typically handle such mesothelioma lawsuits for bigger groups and that keeps them very busy. Moreover, the settlement that might be able to eke out for you may not be in line with your expectations.
It is thus advisable to opt for smaller firms who should be able to devote time and attention for your case and get you justice. They also tend to be more economical and that is a very important criterion, considering that the lawsuit may drag on and take a long time to get settled.

The symptoms may not be noticed till about 25 to 30 years after the asbestos exposure, but they can be very disturbing. Typical symptoms are accumulation of fluid in the lungs leading to breathing problems, coughing and pain in the chest. Besides pleural mesothelioma, another condition called peritoneal mesothelioma which is a condition affecting the peritoneum can cause abrupt weight loss, anemia and a high level of clotting. If this is not treated on time, it can progress upwards and result in the neck getting swollen apart from the patient experiencing difficulty in swallowing.

It is often difficult to immediately diagnose this cancer as the patient may exhibit symptoms common to other disorders and it does require investigation at the right time to identify mesothelioma. If a patient has had prior exposure to asbestos, specific chest and lung X-rays are taken to identify any pleural thickening that may have occurred. In that event, a CAT scan as well as an MRI is advised to detect any growth tissues in the pleura and if that is also positive, a biopsy is done to ascertain the presence of any cancerous cells in the pleural fluid. As far as peritoneal mesothelioma is concerned, only a laparoscopy can detect any cancerous cells in the abdomen.

Once diagnosis is complete, the examining doctor identifies the stage of cancer and this is again categorized as localized if it is just restricted to the surface of the membrane and advanced if it has managed to make further inroads into the body.

During those times, mines were permitted to operate without basic safeguards and the concept of hygienic and safe work practices were relatively unknown. Due to this lack of adequate safety nets, many workmen began experiencing symptoms of mesothelioma on a yearly basis. What was more worrying was the fact that many cases that were diagnosed were of people who got it through the secondary route, having not been exposed to asbestos directly.

Mesothelioma saw its first case at an Australian mine and that worker had been working in that mine for about three years. Things then began to deteriorate rapidly as people inhabiting the town where asbestos mining was being carried out started exhibiting symptoms and this continued well into the 1970s, when the Australian Government took a long pending decision to shut it down. Unfortunately, the damage had been done and many people had fallen prey to this dangerous disease.

The tragedy just highlights the fact that if proper safeguards in the working environment had been implemented at that time, history would have had a different story to tell.

When you are a plaintiff in a Mesothelioma lawsuit, you should be aware that you qualify for funds, treated as loans against the probable proceeds that you will eventually get at the end of the lawsuit. This is referred to as the Mesothelioma lawsuit loan program or litigation loan. Contrary to the condition of normal loans having to be paid off in full, this loan is a non recourse advance and the plaintiff need not pay it back till the time the lawsuit is settled or the plaintiff has won.The question is who can file such a lawsuit to procure such a benefit?

A Mesothelioma lawsuit is initiated by a person afflicted with the disease or by members of his family if he is deceased. A family member can also initiate a lawsuit if he has contacted the disease through the secondary route. You must be aware that these lawsuits move very slowly and usually the defendants engage the services of reputed lawyers, with the result even if you are on the right side of the law, these lawyers can deploy time delaying tactics using loop holes in the law and drag the case with the intention to frustrate you. You really need to be very persevering to win legal battles and it is in such a scenario that the non recourse mesothelioma funding can help you a lot. After all, you as a patient may have some medical bills to settle apart from the legal fees and since this is ready cash, you will be able to meet those expenses without any problem.

The process itself is a simple one involving just three steps:

1. Wanted: Dead or Alive film You need to submit an application and there is no processing fee charged.

2. This application is then faxed to the Mesothelioma loan disbursing company for processing and approval.

3. The amount sought is then credited to your account.

As mentioned above, you need not pay back this amount if you do not win the case.
